Tequila and Ginger Ale Recipe
If you’re looking for a delicious tequila cocktail that isn’t a margarita, I’ve got the perfect recipe for you! You can’t go wrong with this easy Tequila and Ginger Ale drink! Just 2-ingredients plus a little fresh means you’ll be enjoying this in just minutes!
I’ve become a big tequila fan over the years. And while I typically stick to a Tequila Soda, a Skinny “House” Margarita or a Tequila Gimlet, this easy cocktail is quickly becoming a favorite way to mix things up.
It’s just as easy to make but has a whole new flavor. There’s nothing wrong with a margarita, but you can use tequila in so many other tasty ways!
Ginger ale and tequila is sometimes called a Tequila Slammer. But that sounds a lot more aggressive than I think this drink is.
I like to make the most of each bar item so that I can keep things under control. I like a tidy and efficient home bar that doesn’t take over my home but lets me create unique drinks with ease.
Why This Recipe Works
This recipe is a great one because it uses things you may already have on your bar! Tequila is essential for summer sipping. And ginger ale is a classic mixer that is easy to have on hand (especially in these small cans!)
If you love tequila cocktails, this is for you. And if you want to like it and are looking for ways to make it more palatable, the ginger ale will help! It brings in a sweetness that makes the tequila a little smoother.
It’s so quick and easy! And with just a squeeze of fresh lime, you have a delightfully refreshing cocktail recipe that doesn’t need any special skills or tools!
Ingredients
- Tequila (use your favorite or read about what I think is the best tequila).
- Ginger Ale
- Lime
I prefer to use a Blanco or silver tequila in my cocktails. I find that it tastes a little bit crisper.
You don’t have to splurge on Patron for this drink, but you should use something that you know you like the flavor of.
*I want to be honest and let you know that while the bottle of this Los Sundays tequila looks cool, it is not my favorite in terms of flavor. I should have learned with my wine purchasing, don’t trust a cute label.
See recipe card for quantities.
Instructions
1. Add ice to a cocktail glass.
2. Measure out the tequila.
If you don’t love the flavor, I would pour 1 ounce or less.
If you like the taste and want a little bit of a stronger cocktail, add up to 2 ounces.
3. Top with ginger ale.
The ratio for this drink is 1 part tequila to 2 parts ginger ale. So if you used 1 ounce of tequila you would add 2 parts ginger ale. Or if you did 2 ounces of tequila, you would do 4 ounces of ginger ale.
What I love about making cocktails is that you can make them exactly how you think they taste best.
*Hint: Don’t be afraid to sip the cocktail and adjust as you go!
4. Give it a squeeze of lime.
I like to add a squeeze of fresh lime juice. It adds a touch of acidity to the sweet soda that I think helps to balance out all the flavors.
This base recipe can also help you to make other tasty tequila and ginger ale cocktails. While I’m not listing them all out here, you can browse a few simple variations below to help make this drink a little bit more creative.
Variations
- Spicy – muddle fresh serrano peppers in the glass before adding ice to make it spicy!
- Reposado – You can use reposado tequila to give it a little bit more flavor. It’s aged in barrels for a darker color and more complex flavor.
- Other Citrus – You can use fresh lemon, orange or grapefruit for a slight citrus twist.
- Ginger Beer – If you like the taste of ginger beer better, you can use that instead. That makes it closer to a Tequila Mule but it’s still a tasty drink.
- Salt the rim – You can add a salt rim for a fantastic sweet and salty moment. You can learn 3 Ways to Rim a Glass here.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes! Especially if you like the flavor of tequila. Since this drink doesn’t have a ton of other ingredients or flavor, you will be able to taste the nuances of the tequila.
No! While both are non-alcoholic, ginger ale is much sweeter than ginger beer. Ginger beer has a more bold ginger kick and can be an acquired taste. I find it much more refreshing in cocktails than ginger ale but sometimes the extra sweetness of ginger ale helps to balance the flavors of a mixed drink.
As I mentioned in the post I prefer to use blanco tequila. But resposado tequila is also really nice with ginger ale because of the slight oak and caramel notes.
This crazy easy Tequila Ginger Ale is refreshing, fast and great any time of year.
