I’ll be honest. At first, the idea of this Red Wine Smoothie was a novelty. Inspired by the show called The Santa Clarita Diet on Netflix, I thought I’d make this a funny post with a recipe no one would want. Turns out THIS WINE SMOOTHIE IS DELICIOUS!
The premise of the show is that Drew’s character comes down with a virus that basically makes her a zombie. In one of the episodes, Drew is out speed walking with the neighbors and carrying a meat (human) smoothie. They have no idea about her secret and no idea that she is, in fact, consuming a person, during their walk and chat.
It looked like a regular berry smoothie and made me come up with my own smoothie (with a secret) recipe.
This red wine smoothie is so easy to make. It’s full of healthy fruit and protein-filled greek yogurt. And yes, a little wine. I’m not a huge red wine fan but I love the flavor!
Why this recipe works
I love wine cocktails and this one couldn’t be easier. It takes just a minute to blend everything up and you’re left with a sip-able drink perfect for any time of day.
The berries bring out the flavors of the red wine and the yogurt smooths it all out. And it’s a great way to use up an open bottle of wine you might have sitting around.
Aside from a blender, you don’t need any special tools and it’s so easy it’s basically fool-proof.
If you love smoothies and red wine, you’ll love this! This is a fun cocktail idea for vacation. I can literally see all my friends enjoying this around a pool on a girl’s getaway.
Or sip a red wine smoothie while you watch The Santa Clarita Diet! I love throwing binge-watching parties, don’t you?

Ingredients
A smoothie made with wine is so tasty! A fruity red wine works best, like a Pinot Noir.
A small amount of plain Greek yogurt helps to tone down the bite from the wine and berries and the small amount of honey adds the perfect touch of sweetness.
You can use vanilla yogurt if you prefer. Because flavored yogurts tend to have more sugar added, you may want to skip adding any addition honey.
Frozen mixed berries like blackberry, raspberry, blueberries and strawberries work best for this recipe. You can add other fruits (like peaches or mango) but they may fight with the wine flavor.
Directions
Add red wine to your blender or individual-sized smoothie cup. I love my Ninja blender for getting the frozen fruit pureed really well. Plus it’s great if you want to make just one or a bunch!
Add your frozen mixed berries. Berry flavor blends really nicely with red wine.
Add a little Greek yogurt. In this recipe, it gives it a really creamy feel and cuts the acidity of the wine.
Just a wee bit of honey is all you need. I don’t like sweet drinks so if you need more, just add it.
Blend that red wine smoothie aaaalllllllll the way up.
Pour into your favorite on-the-go smoothie cup. Your friends will NEVER know about your delicious little secret ingredient. (Just make sure your kids know about it so they won’t sample it.)
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. The texture will change a bit but it can be made ahead of time. You can store it in the fridge or freezer (in a freezer safe container) until ready to drink. It will not freeze completely because of the alcohol.
Yes! Just use the regular sized pitcher for the blender and change the servings on the recipe card! If you have to open a bottle of wine to make one, you might as well make a bunch!
Yes! If the smoothie is too thick, add a little apple juice or even plain water.
Fruity wine is best in this recipe. Just ask someone at a wine store for a suggestion. Don’t let them sell you something crazy expensive. Or just use what you have. And use less if you don’t want the wine flavor to be overpowering.
If red wine is not your thing, sure! A moscato or Pinot Grigio which would both go well with berries.
You can leave out the yogurt if you don’t want dairy in your drink. The smoothie will still taste amazing!
Add more wine if you want more wine flavor! It will also help to thin it out if it’s too thick to start.
