Today it is the turn of smoky mezcal to be given the Mule treatment.

So if you enjoy a classic Moscow Mule, you’ve got a favorite bottle of mezcal on hand — or you’re just looking for an excuse to break out those super pretty copper mugs, this Mezcal Mule recipe is for you!

This is a great introductory cocktail for anyone looking to get started with Mezcal.

You only need three ingredients to make a refreshing Mezcal Mule!

Here’s what you need to make this Mezcal Mule recipe:

I made this Mezcal Mule cocktail with Casamigos Mezcal. It’s not a super authentic Mezcal but I had had it on my shelf for a year. Mezcal is a bit too smoky for my taste. There are also more authentic mezcals on the market, and not all of them are super smoky so choose something that suits your own tastes.

Same goes with the ginger beer – this is such a simple, refreshing cocktail to make with mezcal it is hard to go wrong using your favorite ingredients.

But, you really do want to use fresh lime here instead of a substitute like Rose’s Lime. Good mezcal can be pricy, so you want to pair it with the best ingredients!

Tips

  • I like to measure out my ginger beer for mules. Ginger beer can overpower the flavor of other ingredients you are using so you don’t want to fill to the top of the cup or you will throw off the balance.
  • If you are making several of these you’ll want to use a citrus squeezer. This is my favorite one because it is sturdy and washes well in the dishwasher.

Variations

  • MAKE IT SPICY – muddle a few Jalapeño slices with the mezcal in another glass before straining it over the ice to give this Mezcal Moscow Mule a bit of a kick!
  • USE TEQUILA – of course, if you don’t have mezcal to hand, a good tequila is a good substitute to make a Tequila Mule. Also see my FAQ’s below for mixing tequila and mezcal in this drink.
  • DITCH THE GINGER BEER – Don’t have ginger beer on hand? No problem. Mezcal, fresh lime and some agave syrup is a delicious drink to sip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to serve this Mezcal Mule in a copper mug?

No, but it does look super pretty plus it helps keep your drink super cold for as long as possible. If you love a good mule, you’ll want to invest in some! While it doesn’t act like an insulated cup, it does get frosty on the outside and make the sipping experience really great.

Can I make this mule with ginger ale instead of ginger beer?

Yes, but remember using Ginger Ale will make a much, much sweeter drink and won’t have quite as much ginger flavor.

I like the smoky flavor of the mezcal but it is a bit too much in this drink. Is there any way I can tone it down a little?

Yes! Simply replace half the mezcal with tequila to make a more balanced drink if mezcal is not to your taste. You can also play with the ratios to make your own signature drink.
