An Unsweet Lavender Flavoring for Cocktails

This recipe for Lavender Tea is a quick and easy way to flavor all kinds of drinks without adding any extra sweetness! From cocktails to coffee, you’ve got to give this a try.

Flavored simple syrups (like my Strawberry Simple Syrup) are a great way to add tons of flavor to cocktails and mocktails. But when I want a really bold flavor, sometimes the drink becomes too sweet.

Using this lavender-infused water is an easy way to bump up the floral flavor without adding extra sugar.

Plus, you can sip this as you would traditionally sip a cup of tea as well. Lavender is super relaxing and by steeping it in water, you get that gorgeous aroma and beautiful flavor.

Lavender is such an interesting ingredient to use in recipes. It’s floral with a touch of sweetness but works really well in savory applications too. It’s a unique flavor that will make your mouth happy.

Ingredients

What you need to make lavender tea.

When buying dried lavender, make sure you are buying food-grade buds. You want them to be suitable for consumption with no chemicals, etc.

You could also add sugar to make it more of a traditional simple syrup if you want.

And if you already have lavender buds, you should make these easy Lavender Sachets with any leftover lavender. They are a great DIY and work any time of year (and not just as a balloon weight!)

How To Use Lavender Tea

  • Add a tablespoon to your morning coffee
  • Add a tablespoon or two to some club soda for a tasty DIY soda
  • Add an ounce to a cocktail recipe. It would pair well with lemon flavors and with gin or vodka. It would be so good in a lavender mojito!
  • Add it to iced tea or an iced tea sangria.
  • Add it to hot chocolate, just make sure you get a strong lavender flavor from steeping the tea so it will stand up to the bold chocolate flavor.

Tips and Tricks

  • Want to bump up the lavender flavor even more? Add more buds to the same amount of water and steep for a few minutes longer.
  • If you are enjoying this as a regular tea, you could use a Tea Infuser to make by the glass. You’ll need to play around with the steeping time to find your perfect flavor profile. Most infusions require 3 minutes or more in boiling water so start there and add an extra minute with each cup to find your perfect cup of homemade lavender tea!

Health Benefits of Lavender Tea

Aside from it tasting delicious, it turns out there are quite a few ways drinking lavender tea might help with your health. I don’t know about you but I always find the scent of lavender so relaxing!

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of lavender is edible?

There are many varieties of lavender. I wouldn’t pick wild lavender and use it as you won’t know what type it is (but if you grow it in your garden and you know it is a variety safe to eat go ahead!) But buying food-grade lavender, from a reputable source, ensures that you are buying something made to be used in food or drinks.

How does lavender tea taste?

So. Good. Seriously, it does. It’s a bit sweet, herbal and a little floral. Less is more when using it in recipes. Some people think it tastes like soap when the flavor is too bold.

How do you store it?

Store this lavender flavoring in an air-tight jar in the refrigerator for about a week.
