Lavender Lemonade is my fave summer drink
Doesn’t it sound refreshing?
The idea has been in my head since before school was out and I finally decided to make some. I’m not usually a big fan of lemonade.
I won’t drink it if it’s made from a powder and I can’t drink anything that is too sweet. Yuck.
Supporting a lemonade stand is almost torture for me. I’d like to say I have a sophisticated palette. But really, I’m just picky.

I did research on how to make it before I started. And I decided to make Honey Lavender Lemonade instead of using white sugar.
I felt like it would sweeten the bitter lemon juice without making it overly sugary.
I know some people are probably a little afraid of the idea of flavoring their drinks with lavender.
If done wrong it can veer into lavender soap territory. But I really love the flavor it adds to things!ย
This lavender lemonade recipe has a delicious herbal quality and a slight floral note that is so refreshing.
Lavender Lemonade is the perfect thing to bring to a summer picnic. I also brought it along on our Duffy boat trip through Newport Harbor.
I mean, you can’t JUST drink wine. That would be uncivilized.
And if you actually drank it and didn’t forget that you brought it with you, it would probably prevent you from getting a severe hangover the next day.
Not that I did… Also, now I have a favorite hangover supplement that could have helped.ย
What kind of lavender do you use
There are several ways to add lavender to food but I prefer to use food-grade dried lavender. It’s not all that hard to find.
You can order it on Amazon or find it at your local health food store.ย
They put it in the dried herbs area so I felt really comfortable using it in this homemade lemonade.ย
Since I wanted to make sure this didn’t get too sweet I made a lavender “tea” instead of a lavender simple syrup.
It’s a great way to get the flavor without adding sweetness.
I found a lavender plant on my shopping trip but they brought it out from the back and it just looked sad.
And in my research, I realized that there are a variety of lavender plants and I don’t think all of them are food-grade which made it feel a little sketchy.
I’ve heard of people using lavender essential oils but not all brands are food-safe. So this isn’t my favorite. But I do use lavender in my DIY diffuser ALL the time.
How to make Lavender Lemonade
Making homemade lemonade is really a lot of work. I typically buy Simply Lemonade when I need it for cocktails.
But this Lavender Lemonade shines because of the fresh citrus juices. The only thing that could make it better would be Meyer Lemons.ย
Meyer Lemons are so badass. They have the best scent and the best flavor. But you can’t find them all year long.
Ingredients
- fresh lemon juice
- fresh lime juice
- lavender “tea”
- raw honey
- water
You need a crapload of lemons. And maybe some limes. I freaking love limes.
Like, I love limes like I used to love the California Raisins (not the fruit, the super cute Motown singing characters). ย
I got one of those hand squeezer juicer things and it’s AWESOME! It makes juicing citrus super easy and you get the more out of the fruit than if you are doing it by hand.
If you don’t have one, go get one. Apparently Target thinks these squeezer things are a luxury item and wanted $12 for one. Uh, no.
My grocery store had it for about $6. Come on Target, be cool.
Updated: I take all of that back. This OXO squeezer is $16 and worth every penny. The one from the store didn’t age well… Like, at all.
I use this hand juicer for a lot of my easy cocktail recipes.ย
How to Make Lavender Tea
You really should make this Lavender Tea the day before you want to make your lemonade.ย It’s super easy but takes a while.
What is Lavender Tea
Lavender Tea is another way to get that gorgeous flavor into drinks and cocktails without adding sweetness.
All you do is steep the dried lavender in water to extract that floral flavor that is so wonderful.
It’s like making simple syrup but leaving out the sugar. And also you don’t need to heat up the water.
I took about 1 cup of water and 1 TBSP of dried lavender and put it in a mason jar.
Then I shook it up a little and left it at room temperature overnight. In the morning, you’ve got lavender “tea”.
I’ve also made this teat by boiling water and letting it steep for at least an hour. This method takes less time to make.
Just make sure you have plenty of time to let it cool all the way down.
All you have to do is strain the newly flavored water through a coffee filter or cheesecloth.
And you are left with this fantastic amber-ish water that smells awesome. ย
There is nothing better than the smell of lavender!

And now you are ready to make your Honey Lavender Lemonade.
The sprigs above are purely decorative. BTW, I found the pretty sprigs at Trader Joe’s. But there was no telling if they were food grade or not.
I wasn’t going to take any chances. I didn’t want my tombstone to say “She died, super relaxed, drinking lavender lemonade.” ย
It would be so much cooler if it said something like “She died valiantly while trying to defend the world from evil clowns.”
Directions
To a pitcher add the lavender tea and fresh citrus.ย
Add the honey a few tablespoons at a time. Then add the water and taste as you go. Add more honey as needed to get the perfect balance that your tastebuds love.ย
I was worried that the raw honey wouldn’t be a great choice for mixing into liquids. But it worked great, actually.
I just used a whisk and whisked for a short time and it blended right in.
I also thought it might harden back into a solid when I put it in the fridge, but it didn’t. I’m a fan. Plus I love the flavor it gave. It pairs really well with the lavender.
And there it is. A delicious Lavender Lemonade.
You can easily make this more adult-friendly by adding vodka. Or gin.ย
