Let’s make a Moscow Mule with Kahlua!

Why this recipe works

A Kahlua Mule is a coffee twist on a tequila Mule – aka a Mexican Mule – and it’s a great alternative to the super trendy Espresso Martini.

Kahlua may not the first bottle that comes to mind if you wanted to amp up a Mexican Mule. Or even the second. Or the third. But it should be.

The rum coffee flavors of Kahlua pair so well with both tequila and ginger beer making this recipe for a mule with Kahlua a no brainer.

It’s like an Espresso Martini and a Moscow Mule had a love child. A love child with a delicious, tequila kick.

Seriously, I can’t wait for you to try this delicious cocktail recipe!!

You only need 3 ingredients to make a Mexican Mule with Kahlua!

Here’s what you need to make a refreshing Kahlua Mule!

  • Kahlua
  • tequila
  • ginger beer, chilled
  • lime, to garnish

As you’re adding Kahlua to this Mexican Mule recipe, you don’t want to mess around too much with the tequila: choose a silver tequila with a nice clean taste, anything complex will be lost in this Kahlua Moscow Mule!

You really do want to use ginger beer instead of ginger ale here which is much sweeter: Kahlua is rather sweet already, so you don’t want the finished cocktail to be overly sweet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a way to make this drink a little less sweet?

It’s okay, everyone has different tastes! This mule with Kahlua is perfectly balanced for me, but if you want to reduce the sweetness a little add lime juice for some acidity (and more lime flavor!) or serve it in a bigger glass / mule mug so you can dilute it with more ice. Also, the colder the drink is the less sweet it will taste as chilling something reduces sweetness: it is why melted ice cream always tastes slightly too sweet, but perfect frozen.

Do you have to serve this Moscow Mule in a copper mug?

Use whatever glass you like, but I do love a good copper mug for my Moscow Mule recipes! A copper mug is designed to keep your Mule cocktail cold as you sip making for a better drink.
