Why you’ll love this cake mix cookies recipe
With just 4 ingredients and one of my favorite candies, these cookies made with chocolate cake mix and M&Ms are going to be a new family favorite dessert!
My youngest son has a birthday just after Christmas. He’s not a cake guy. Instead, he asks for these chocolate cake mix cookies. They are ridiculously easy to make and have a rich chocolate flavor that is SO so good.

The M&Ms add a crunchy texture, and while I use red and green because his birthday is just after Christmas, you can really use any color you want.

Ingredients
These Devil’s Food Cake Mix Cookies couldn’t be easier. They’re insanely delish, and I love that they’re ready to go in under 15 minutes.
- devil’s food cake mix
- eggs
- olive oil (or vegetable)
- holiday M&M’s, plus more to garnish on top
The olive oil makes these chocolate cookies extra moist. You could also sub in vegetable oil, instead. I used Cut 1886 olive oil. I use it to dress my salads and I love the flavor.
What is awesome is that although I used holiday color M&Ms, you can use any M&Ms to make this perfect no matter what time of year.
How to Make Cookies with Chocolate Cake Mix
Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Step 1
Grab a batter bowl and add the dry cake mix.
Step 2
Add eggs, oil, and 1/4 cup of candy.
Step 3
Use a spoon to mix until smooth (except, of course, for the M&ms).
My batter was very dry. So I added about 1 TBSP of water. I don’t recall the batter being that dry on previous bakings so it absolutely could have been user error.
But in case your dough comes out dry, you can save it with a bit of water. Add a little at a time and mix well before adding more if needed.
Step 4
Roll dough into 1-inch balls, and place on a baking sheet; 2 inches apart.
Step 5
Top each dough ball with 2-3 M&M’s.
Step 6
Bake 6-8 minutes. Remove from oven, and let cool for 2 minutes.
Transfer to cooling rack, and finish cooling completely before enjoying.
Adding the extra M&Ms on top really adds the perfect finishing touch.
The first batch I made of these M&Ms Chocolate Cake Mix Cookies, I mixed in my candies and formed balls of cookie dough.
They tasted SO good but didn’t have that wow factor for the presentation.
Tips
- You can use 1/3 cup melted butter in place of olive oil if you prefer.
- These cookies don’t spread much. They are dense. You can remove some of the dry cake mix from the recipe or add a smidge of water to thin out the batter if you want them to spread a bit more.
- Try a different flavor of M&M to give the cookies even more flavor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Devil’s Food Cake Mix is typically a little bit less sweet than the traditional chocolate cake mix. It also uses darker chocolate giving it a rich chocolate flavor, and a touch more of a dry consistency. You can use regular chocolate cake mix but the flavor might be a little bit different.
Yes! You can use chocolate chips instead of M&Ms. You can use mini or regular-sized chips or even chocolate chunks.

Hello friends! I’m so excited to guest post today for Sharon. On my own blog, Casa de Crews, you’ll generally find savory everyday meals, or party food for the masses (I come from a big family, and I love any excuse to make a new party bite!). But I knew for friends of Cupcakes and Cutlery, I’d just have to share a sweet treat. I’m not much of a baker, so when I do bake, I need uncomplicated, but festive desserts (like Sharon’s Wine Cake! – O.M.G. every time I see the photos, I want to make that cake!)
